For a long time, I've been wishing that Republicans would begin to organize extra party funding organizations to compete with the Democrats.
It's frustrating for true believers to listen as party apparatchiks lavish praise on terrible candidates, simply because those candidates had the good sense to run as Republicans.
It's frustrating to watch the party refuse to take a position on controversial ballot issues, simply because a few elected Republicans decided to pick the wrong side.
That's why it's encouraging to know there's a new organization forming in El Paso County, one which can break through the party's structural imperatives to promote conservative causes and primary candidates, without worrying about the written and unwritten rules that govern party behavior.
One of the organizers of this new, as yet unnamed organization is Nathan Fisk, until recently the executive director of the El Paso County Republican Party. He will almost certainly be able to raise money since that is what he has been doing for the past two years.
But, will that money be used to promote party division or party unity? If the above quote isn't clear that the organizers intend this effort to be disruptive, consider this paragraph:
Segments of the establishment will probably feel threatened by their new organization, but [ Nathan ] Fisk says, "Our goals are Republican goals. We represent an extension beyond the scope of the local GOP to challenge liberal politicians like state Rep. [ Michael ] Merrifield, state Sen. [ John ] Morse, and Gov. [ Bill ] Ritter, and to aggressively promote fiscally and socially conservative candidates."
The Greg Garcia-Nathan Fisk faction lost a close election for control to the El Paso County Republican Party. They lost because they couldn't be neutral in primary elections. Now, it appears that they want to try to siphon as much money as possible away from the winners and use that money for more divisive politics.
It is hard to read this report any other way.
Talk about sore losers.
I guess that I've got to learn to be careful what I wish for.
