Jason Salzman at the Rocky Mountain News laments that Bob Ewegen disappeared from the editorial pages of the Denver Post without a whimper.
As one who watches and writes on the goings on at the Denver Post editorial page, allow me to speculate that Bob Ewegen was shown the door. This is pure speculation. I have no inside information.
Two embarrassing things happened regarding the Denver Post editorial board just prior to the election. Bob Ewegen was definitely involved in one and may have been involved in the other.
1. The editorial board had adopted an anti-Amendment 58 position. Just prior to the election, Bob Ewegen wrote an editorial in favor of Amendment 58 without mentioning that it was his position, not the position of the Denver Post editorial board. Within a couple of days, a new anti-Amendment 58 editorial appeared making it clear that the editorial board position was against Amendment 58.
2. Someone leaked a recording of the John McCain interview with the Denver Post editorial board. There can’t have been many suspects. Bob Ewegen never pretended to be non-partisan, which would have put the target on his back if someone were seriously looking.
In most organizations, either of those events would be cause for an abrupt departure, without a long goodbye.
For about a year, we have had a “Denver Post Embarrasses Itself” category. Bob Ewegen was very often the subject of posts that made it into that category.
