The last several days I've been imaging what our lives and our country will look like one year from now. Some things here in Colorado will never change, no matter who becomes president. A year from now we'll be seeing the last of our beloved autumn aspen glow against snow sprinkled peaks, framed in azure blue skies. The Broncos will either be considered serious play-off contenders, or not. Halloween lawn decor will not be competing for attention against Obama or McCain yard signs. The 2008 election will be a memory, but hopefuls for 2012 will be striving for media exposure. Questions of whether or not our voting process was legitimate or whether all the overseas military votes were counted will never be answered.
We know alot of things we consider normal and comfortable in our lives will still be around this time next year, but how much will change depending on our president?
Will the multilaterlist, Pres. Barack Obama raise eyebrows for being left of his European counterparts? Will the Europe that once was where we are now running to, full speed ahead, wonder what happened to the great American Super Power? Will our Great Uniter of a president have healed the wounds he says we have self-inflicted under Republican leadership in terms of our standing in the world? Will Mrs. Obama no longer believe that American is a down-right, mean country? Will public school students study an entire unit on their new president, following the lead set by the 2008 McDougal Littrell English literature textbook for 8th graders that devotes several pages to Obama's "life of service"? Will a Democrat majority Congress conduct first one ethics hearing after another regarding Republicans rather than attend to the business of the people? When Republicans write to their representatives, who now happen to be mostly Democrats, will they have any say in new policy or spending? Will the Supreme Court move to a leftist majority with judge's rulings completely changing our way of life?
There is one thing we can predict without having a crystal ball and that is, the media will be like a breath of fresh spring mountain air. Their reporting will show us that all is well now since a far left liberal Democrat is residing in the White House. The world will love us again and all the war and fighting and human suffering will cease. The weather will improve dramatically. The economy, which began an immediate rebound the day after President Obama was elected, is now headed up with no end in sight. President Carter's Misery Index will be dug out of the mothballs simply to show that recent polling shows no more misery. People will be happy again and the war on poverty and drugs and all the other social wars we've invested billions in over the last several decades will be nearly won, as long as we keep funneling lots of money into them. We will be told to learn to love the new healthcare system we've been given, administered by the some of the same folks that took care of our business at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The same media that could not allow or trust us to form our own opinions on anything important will educate us on the benefits of government intervention and control into most aspects of our lives.
Should John McCain and Sarah Palin take the reins in Washington, what will October 15, 2009, look like in America? The terrorists around the world will still know that they are being hunted and that we will not sacrifice our way of life to them. The economy will still be weakened but off life support and will be improving steadily. The middle class will still take pride in their country, feeling energized by a vice president that is definitely one of the folks. We will know that we still have a voice and can express our views via conservative talk radio if that's our leaning, and if we are liberal and choose to defame our leaders and our country with cartoons, obscenities or other forms of protest, that right will still be ours under the Constitution. Flags will continue to wave on certain national holidays and on alot of regular days simply because we are proud Americans. Businesses will not close due to over-taxation and subsequently job loss will slow. We will hear nothing but negativity and caustic complaint from the media, but we'll take pride in placing our hands over our hearts when hearing the Star Spangled Banner, taking the lead from our president, a great American hero who has truly sacrificed for his country and can actually claim a lifetime of service to her.
Neither scenario is completely right or wrong and neither carries the promise of a perfect America. There is a stark contrast, however, in what to expect one year from today.
