Last evening I was attending a community function that supports youth, and I was not home to watch either the Charlie Gibson/Sarah Palin interview or the Columbia University forum on service and community involvement. The latter was supposedly held in order to reveal the positions both Obama and McCain have regarding service and the giving of one's time and treasure to the community.
This morning I began following cable news coverage at 4:00 a.m. up until several minutes ago and in alternating between Fox and MSNBC I did not hear one reference to that event. MSNBC's Morning Joe program spent alot of time picking apart Sarah Palin's interview on ABC, but not a word about the forum. This is hard to believe, given the fact this particular network is so "supportive" of Mr. Obama.
One would think that the lead story this morning would be clips of Obama's performance and inspiring rhetoric about his own self-sacrifice and efforts to reform neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago. The MSM have adamantly and angrily defended any suggestion that being a community organizer may not represent real experience in terms of the presidency. Chris Matthews is determined to suggest this is a racial issue. I can only assume Obama's performance may have been lack luster and a better agenda could be served in critiquing Sarah Palin's interview. Except for a few brief comments from Mayor Guiliani, the panel felt she didn't help her image at all, but probably didn't do it any harm either. After what the media put Gov. Palin and her family, specifically her children, through the last couple of weeks, it's a display of grace, character and undeserved civility that she consented to sit down with Charlie Gibson in the first place.
The forum last night was likely designed to showcase the remarkable community activism Sen. Obama has on his resume, and the good that has resulted. His media cohorts again the circle the wagons when he comes under attack or a thin area of his experience is exposed. Yet, no reporting on two of the major cable networks suggests the Obama image may not have been elevated, so perhaps it was better to bury the story and stay on defense against the McCain-Palin ticket instead.
